History

Over the years, African Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ASIAM) has become a driving force for the development of mathematical sciences within the African continent. Its genesis happened during the African Conference of Mathematics and Applications (ACMA) (November 21-24, 2023) at the University of Rwanda, Kigali, Rwanda. The conference brought together mathematicians, researchers, and experts from across the continent, sparking a key discussion on the future of industrial and applied mathematics in Africa.

Prof. Daniel O. Makinde, the Vice President of AMU, Africa Southern region, Prof. Dr. Abdon Atangana President, African Mathematical Union Commission of Research and Innovation, Prof. Wil Schilders, President, International Council of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM). These leaders recognized the transformational potential of the mathematical sciences to address Africa’s fundamental challenges in sustainable development, climate change, health care and economic growth. About their discussions, they laid the groundwork for an effort to leverage applied mathematics to inspire innovation and tackle real problems on the continent.

It was during these productive discussions at ACMA that the African Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics was conceived, and a few years later would officially be launched at the first African Conference for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ACIAM), which took place in Cape Town, South Africa from September 31-October 5, 2024 This historical gathering was a culmination of efforts over the years to bring together the key players in Africa to define ASIAM’s mission and objectives and to chart a way forward for the which will be a significant turning point for industrial and applied mathematics in Africa. The creation of ASIAM is a collective will to provide better recognition of the importance of mathematics in the solution of Africa’s problems and to move the field of industrial mathematics and applied mathematical modeling forward in Africa.

The establishment of ASIAM is a reflection of the vision and collaborative efforts of Africa’s top mathematical scholars who recognize the power of mathematics to revolutionize sectors, enhance quality of life, and play a role in solving worldwide challenges. This society only wishes to be the pillar of cutting-edge mathematical research and applications that will underpin a new era of innovation and sustainable development across the continent. Through collaboration, education, and research, ASIAM strives to empower the next generation of African mathematicians, providing them with the skills needed to address Africa’s most pressing challenges and making a mark on the global mathematical landscape.
